This painting was born from a sudden, almost instinctive impulse. The energy of the defiant rap song I was listening to awakened a sense of urgency within me that I could not ignore. I sprang to my feet and went to the canvas, driven by an undeniable need to capture the essence of a struggle that transcends borders.
During those days, September 8th marked an expression of peaceful resistance: Cubans around the world raised a sunflower—an act of unity and protest in honor of Cuba’s political prisoners. This artwork is nourished by that collective gesture, by the silenced voice that refuses to disappear. It is a visual echo of an unrelenting fight, a tribute to those who, despite adversity in Cuba, uphold dignity and the right to freedom.
Rosa María Payá, with her tireless battle for human rights in Cuba, became a central inspiration. Her courage and commitment to truth are embedded in the texture of the piece, in the urgent brushstrokes that seek not perfection, but raw authenticity and emotion.
